Jeffery Carrier’s and-one layup with 30 seconds left pushed the Mason County Central boys basketball team to a 54-53 victory over Montague on Tuesday in a West Michigan Conference matchup.
Carrier had a huge game overall, scoring 36 points while adding nine rebounds and three blocks.
Montague led 10-9 lead after the first quarter and appeared to be in control with a 26-16 lead at halftime.
But the Spartans’ offense came alive in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 24-12 to take a 39-38 lead after three.
Free throw shooting was key for the Spartans in the fourth quarter, when they sank 7 of 8 from the stripe to gain the win.
Bruce Banks chipped in with eight points for Mason County Central. Kenyon Johnson was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 16 points.
The Spartans improved to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The Wildcats fell to 3-4 on the season and 1-3 in league action.
