The Muskegon Lumberjacks completed a three-game road trip sweep, defeating the Dubuque Fighting Saints 5-4 on Sunday at the Mystique Ice Arena in Dubuque, Iowa.
The Lumberjacks defeated three different squads during this weekend stretch beating Green Bay on Friday and Madison Saturday before their victory over Dubuque.
Muskegon is now 18-3 on the season, good for 36 points and first place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference. The Lumberjacks are currently 12 points ahead of second place Central Illinois.
The Lumberjacks will host Dubuque next Friday and Saturday night at the L.C. Walker Arena. Both games are scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. faceoff.
The Fighting Saints opened the scoring at the 4:24 mark of the first period on a goal from Simon Kjellberg.
Muskegon quickly tied the game 1-1 at the 6:11 mark of the first period on a Nolan Sullivan tally.
Dubuque regained its lead at 2-1 after a goal from Dylan Jackson at the 10:36 mark of the first stanza.
The Lumberjacks responded with three unanswered goals before the first intermission to take a 4-2 lead after 20 minutes of regulation.
Bobby Lynch scored two goals at the 11:11 and 19:00 minute mark while Igor Larionov scored at the 14:15 mark.
Both teams failed to score during the second period.
Muskegon increased its lead to 5-2 on a goal from Nash Nienhuis 3:52 into the third period.
The Fighting Saints attempted a comeback, scoring goals at the 4:58 mark of the third period by Dallas Tulik and 17:25 into the stanza from Matias Maccelli but fell just short.
The Lumberjacks outshot Dubuque by a 31-25 margin.
Muskegon’s goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped 21 of 25 shots.
