The Western Michigan Christian Warriors didn’t let a slow start keep them from gaining a 46-38 victory over Muskegon Catholic in Lakes 8 Conference action on Friday.

WMC fell behind 18-6 after the first quarter and trailed 22-20 going into halftime. But the Warriors outscored MCC 14-8 in the third frame to take a 34-30 lead, then extended their edge down the stretch.

Zach Butkis led the Warriors with 12 points, Hayden Hubers added 10 while Owen Varnado followed with nine.

MCC was led by Jared Dugener with 23 points and eight rebounds. Andre Watson II followed with 12 points and five rebounds.

WMC improved to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

CSAA

KENT CITY 61, GR WEST CATHOLIC 32 – Kent City’s defense stepped up and held West Catholic in check.

The Eagles jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter, led 36-12 at the half, and 49-21 after three quarters.

Eli Carlson paced Kent City with 22 points while Brenden Geers added 14. Max Hudson had a team-high seven assists.

HOLTON 73, HESPERIA 44 – The Red Devils rolled past visiting Hesperia in a conference matchup.

Holton jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and had a 39-21 edge at halftime. The Red Devils applied the knockout punch with a 19-7 edge in the third frame.

Michael Ward had a team-high 18 points for Holton. Jacob Klemundt led Hesperia with 14 points while Johnny Segura added 12.

The Red Devils improved to 6-6 overall and 5-1 in the CSAA Silver. Hesperia dropped to 0-14 overall and 0-6 in the CSAA Silver.

O-K BLACK

MUSKEGON 69, FRUITPORT 23 – Vern Nash and Jarvis Walker paced the Big Reds with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Muskegon led 21-5 after the first quarter and carried a commanding lead the rest of the game.

GRAND RAPIDS CATHOLIC CENTRAL 81, SPRING LAKE 54 – State-ranked Grand Rapids Catholic lived up top its reputation with an easy victory over Spring Lake.

The Cougars hit 12 three-pointers on their way to the conference win.

Spring Lake’s Noah Verlinde had a team-high 12 points and Lucas Lyyski added 11.

The Lakers fell to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

O-K RED

EAST KENTWOOD 56, GRAND HAVEN 50 (OT) – The Bucs’ dropped their conference matchup against East Kentwood in overtime.

Grand Haven fell behind early, trailing 17-9 after the first quarter and 24-22 at the half. The Bucs pulled ahead in the third, leading 34-32 at the third buzzer. The game remained even in the fourth quarter and was tied 45-45 at the end of regulation.

East Kentwood had more gas left in the extra session, outscoring Grand Haven 12-5.

Owen Ross led the Bucs in scoring with 19 points. Bryce Taylor added 14 points while Andrew Sinke followed with 10.

The Bucs’ fell to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in O-K Red action.

ALLIANCE LEAGUE

FRUITPORT CALVARY CHRISTIAN 50, HOLLAND CALVARY 44 – The Eagles (5-7, 2-4) used a 15-11 fourth quarter advantage to put away the victory.

Luke Anhalt and Ben Zelenka led Fruitport Calvary Christian with 11 points apiece while Zach Zehr and Jacob McFarren each added 10.
