North Muskegon’s Aya Johnson advances in junior championship match play

Aya Johnson from North Muskegon defeated Emma Smyser of Naples, Fla., 3 and 2 in the championship flight of the Womens Western Golf Association’s National Junior Championship at the Cincinnati Country Club, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the round of 16, Johnson will take on Christina Paulsen of Ridgewood, NJ on Thursday morning. A morning victory for Johnson would put her into the quarterfinal round later on Thursday.

Muskegon’s Britni Gielow lost to Ellie McGuire of Wilmette, Ill. 2 and 1 in the Third Flight. Gielow will face Sydney Murphy of Plymouth in the Third Flight consolation round. Tee time is at 12:15.
