The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has plenty of opportunities for outdoor lovers to take advantage of some DNR programs.

Bird Watching 101
Where: Duck Lake State Park
When: Saturday, Aug. 11, 9-10 a.m.

Learn how to locate and identify birds as we explore the birds of Duck Lake State Park’s diverse environment offering the Lake Michigan shoreline, coastal dunes and wooded areas. You never know what we may find! Binoculars will be provided for use during the event. For more information, please contact Muskegon State Park at 231-744-3480.

Meteors and S’mores
Where: Muskegon State Park
When: Sunday, Aug. 12, 9-11 p.m.

Come enjoy tasty S’mores while learning about the Perseid meteor shower! This Meteor shower occurs annually in August. The park will be open late to allow visitors to watch for meteors as they enter the atmosphere. We will meet near the Lake Michigan beach day use parking area. For more information, please contact Muskegon State Park at 231-744-3480.

Volunteer Stewardship Workday
Where: P.J. Hoffmaster State Park
When: Saturday, Aug. 18, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

We’re evicting invasive shrubs from residing in the campground and along the popular Ridgeline Trail! Volunteer Stewards are invited to join us as we work to locate and remove honeysuckle and autumn olive lingering in the campground. These unwanted plants can spread to the nearby forested dunes and harm habitat for migratory birds and other native species. Meet at the campground entrance off of Lake Harbor Road.

Visit the Stewardship Workday Page for more information about what to bring, what to wear and a complete listing of volunteer opportunities.

Kite Making 101
Where: Ludington State Park
When: Monday, Aug. 20, 7-8 p.m.

As a child, it was easy to find enjoyment in the simplest activities like flying a kite on a windy day. We invite you to feel like a child again and share that experience with your own children at Ludington State Park. Ages 3 to 103 are welcome to meet in the basement of the Lake Michigan beach house at 7:00 p.m., where Mike and Susan of Air Fun Kites will be providing all of the materials necessary to construct your very own kite. Providing there is enough wind, we will fill the sky with your unique creations for all to enjoy. For more information about this event, please call the park at 231-843-2423.
