BENZIE – Mason County Central coach Scott Briggs was quite pleased with his team’s 35-0 victory over Benzie Central on Friday night.

Both offensive and defensive lines were solid and the Spartans had just one turnover and were assessed three penalties. Not bad for a season opener when most coaches aren’t surprised to see at least a handful of mistakes.

“It was pretty error free for us,” Briggs said. “This should help us with the rest of the season. It was a good way to start the season.”

By the half, the visiting Spartans had a 22-0 lead.

Mason County Central racked up 428 yards of total offense, including 306 yards on the ground. Justin Steiger rushed 11 times for 94 yards and Alan Barnhart rushed 12 times for 90 yards. Steiger scored two touchdowns and  Barnhart had one.

Other Spartan touchdowns came from Murphy O’Brien, whose only rush of the game resulted in a 3-yard touchdown run and Payton Tyndall galloped 68 yards for a third-quarter TD.

MCC quarterback David Anderson completed 7-of-12 passes for 122 yards.

Defensively, Mark Sloan was the leading tackler with 10 and Tyndall had an interception.
