Ivan Navarrete scored a goal in the first overtime and that lifted the Muskegon Community College Jayhawk men’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Cuyahoga on Sunday.

The deciding goal was set up by Greg Sischo and Ryan Wagenmaker.

The victory came despite the fact the game did not start out so well for the Jayhawks (2-0). Just a minute into the game, all-conference goalkeeper Tyler Lane was issued a red card for a takedown on a breakaway in front of the Jayhawks’ goal. That left Coach Ben Ritsema’s team with 10 players against 11 for Cuyahoga.

Lane was replaced by Patrick Stewart, who notched the victory in net.

In the opening half, Tanner Schaap gave MCC the lead with assistance from Sischo and Navarrete

That lead held until the second half when Cuyahoga not only tied the game, but gained the lead. Carlos Baltran and Kameron Patteson notched goals for the visitors.

Cuyahoga also received a red card near the midpoint of the second half, which left the teams playing with 10 players each.

Michael Schmitt notched the tying goal for the Jayhawks with 3:44 remaining in regulation.

MCC outshot Cuyahoga 13-11. Stewart finished with nine saves and Cuyahoga goalkeeper Andrew Ball had 10.
