The Shelby Tigers will be making their first appearance in a district championship game since 2001 after beating Kalkaska 42-21 in a Division 5 pre-district game on Friday night.

Devin Mussell scored three touchdowns and Nathan Lentz added two as the Tigers pulled away with 22 fourth-quarter points.

The Tigers will host Maple City Glen Lake, which beat Boyne City 28-16 on Friday night, in the district championship game next week.
Shelby, which improved to 8-2 on the season, jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the second quarter on three touchdowns from Mussell.
Mussell scored on a pair of 2-yard runs and added an 18-yard TD pass from Spencer Peters as the Tigers led 20-8 at halftime.
After Kalkaska cut the lead to 20-14, Shelby’s Forrest Courtright scored on a 5-yard run to increase the Shelby lead to 28-14.
Lentz closed out the scoring with TD runs of 28 and 24 yards in the fourth quarter.
Lentz led Shelby with 91 yards on 14 carries and Courtright gained 75 yards on 13 rushes.
Peters completed 7-of-11 passes for 139 yards, while Mussell caught three passes for 53 yards and Shane Kajtazi added two catches for 42 yards.
Ben Schroeder led the Shelby defense with 14 tackles and Mussell added nine, while Courtright and Anthony Guerra had interceptions.
