It was a memorable season of boys soccer at Mona Shores High School.

The Sailors’ stingy defense and top-notch goalkeeping set school records for fewest goals allowed in a season.

That effort allowed the Sailors to set a school record for victories.

And to the victors go the spoils and Coach Jeremy Leffring, who was named the Local Sports Journal Dream Team coach of the year for the Upper Tier.

The Sailors finished the season 18-2-1 overall, 10-0 in the OK Black race.

Mona Shores’ tournament trail ended in the Division 1 district finals in a 1-0 loss to Grand Haven.

Leffring was chosen in a vote of a veteran committee of local soccer coaches and the Local Sports Journal.

Here is a look at the first-team selections:

Willie Bennink, Grand Haven: Finished with eight goals and eight assists. Was named all-conference and a second-team all-state selection in Division 1. Was a three-year varsity player.

Jacob Carlson, Mona Shores: While the Sailors’ defense was stingy, the offense was potent and that’s because of Carlson’s 24-goal season. Was a four-year varsity player who set a school record with seven goals in a game.

Adam Clauss, Spring Lake: Made an impact all four years on the varsity. As a senior, he was named to the state’s Dream Team, which honors the best in the state regardless of class.

Andrew Edwards, Orchard View: This senior defender had two goals and three assists, but was most valuable the leader and voice of the team. His vision and speed were definite assets to the Cardinals, who were state-ranked throughout the season.

Austin Gabris, Spring Lake: His soccer smarts, quickness and ability to put the ball in net were definite assets to the Lakers, who were ranked No. 1 in Division much of the season.

Brandon Gillikin, Reeths-Puffer: One of the reasons for the Rockets’ second-place finish in the OK Black was the play of this senior midfielder, whose skills and leadership were assets to the team.

Nate Hoover, Mona Shores: The Sailors’ potent offense received plenty of support from Hoover, who along with Jacob Carlson led the Sailors to a school record in victories.

Riley Kammeraad, Spring Lake: Size and speed were definite assets to this senior forward. Finished with a school-record 37 goals.

Taylor McLaughlin, Fruitport: His ability to not only score goals, but set up goals were a definite asset to the Trojans.

Chris Saunders, Whitehall: Was named the Vikings’ MVP after posting 23 goals and 9 assists this past season. Was all-conference, all-district and all-region.

Joey Wolffis, Mona Shores: Set school record with 27 career shutouts, including a school-record 15 this past season. Allowed six goals in 21 games this season.
