The Muskegon Community College wrestling team had a successful weekend in New York.

The Jayhawks, ranked No. 8 steamrolled No. 19 Mercyhurst Northeast 39-12. MCC then placed 12 wrestlers in the top 6 in their respective weights in the Thunderwolves Open. That meet was at Niagara Community College in Sanborn, N.Y.

Against Mercyhurst, the Jayhawks fell behind 9-0 early on, but won seven of the next eight matches to win big. Five of those victories were by pin.

“We are pleased with the dual meet effort,” MCC coach Mark Brunger said. “To pick up bonus points in that many matches, against a quality opponent, was extremely impressive.”

In the Thunderwolves Open, MCC was led by finalists Tyler Gibson (125) and Zachary Johnson (174). Both finished second.

Deishawn Stewart had a breakout day by placing third at 133 pounds. He won five of six matches, including a major decision over No. 6-ranked Aaron Smith of Mercyhurst Northeast.

“I’m really happy for Deishawn,” Brunger said. “He has been working hard in the classroom and on that mat and it is starting to pay off for him.”

Nick Starzec (157) and Brett Martin (285) both finished third. Finishing fourth were Steve Ruppert (141) and Jeffrey Tautolo.

Colin Burandt (133), Justin Hagar (149) and Thomas Bolday (197) all finished fifth. Finishing sixth were Michael Lackney (133) and Bryce Jacobs (157).
