The Western Michigan Christian Warriors gave Coach Kyle Mastenbrook his first victory on Tuesday night, a 62-52 nonleague boys basketball victory over the visiting Fruitport Trojans.

“That was a lot of fun,” said Mastenbrook, whose team improved to 1-2 on the season. “They were quick. There were mismatches at both ends. It was our size and their quickness.”

Junior post player Bernard Smith was dominant inside for the Warriors with 17 points and 11 rebounds. It was his third game with a double-double. Henry DeKam added 13 points and eight rebounds and James Jackson added 11 points.

Tyler Fehler led Fruitport (1-2) with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Luke Brown added 11 points, with three 3-pointers and Luke German also reached double figures with 10 points.

WMC led 28-23 at the half, but Fruitport battled back to knot the scored at 34-all in the third quarter. WMC led 39-37 entering the fourth quarter and used a 10-1 in the opening minutes of the final quarter to open up a double-digit lead.

DeKam and Smith, who was battling illness, had seven points each in the final quarter.

“They were quick and shot the lights out,” Mastenbrook said of the Trojans. “But, I was happy with our defense against a quick team that could shoot like that.”
