Nine runs in the first three innings propelled the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks’ womens softball team to a 16-5 victory over the Davenport University jayvee team on Thursday. The Jayhawks also won the nightcap 9-1.
The first inning featured a run-scoring single by Jessica Gillings and a solo home run by Kayti Carlson. The second inning was even more productive thanks to an RBI-single by Alyssa Telling, a two-run single by Carlson and a grand slam home run by Deanna Stickler-Gatson.
MCC also received a fourth-inning home run from Mary Guidice.
Kaytlin Wozniak posted the victory on the mound for the Jayhawks. She allowed one run in three innings. She struck out four, walked two and gave up two hits.
In the second game, the Jayhawks shut the door early with another onslaught of runs.
A solo home run by Gillings and an RBI double by Kelly Barnes set the tone early for MCC. Gillings and Carlson had run-scoring doubles and Brooke Agers hit a sacrifice fly in the second.
Barnes racked up three RBIs on two hits for Muskegon Community College Jayhawks.
Megan VanderWal had seven strikeouts and earned the victory on the mound.
