The Hart Pirates are going to focus on making plays and throwing strikes this upcoming baseball season.

That’s fundamental baseball, but it’s easier said than done at every level of the game.

“Our goal is to compete in every game by making the routine plays and throwing strikes,” Pirate coach Michael Giddings said. “If we can do that, we have a chance to be in every game.”

Last season didn’t go so well for the Pirates, which won just three games.

Key returnees this season include senior Logan Rasmussen (infield, pitcher, catcher), senior Aaron Hepworth (pitcher, catcher, utility), junior Connor Boundy (pitcher, infield) and junior Thomas Stoneman (pitcher, outfield).

Newcomers expected to contribute include eight juniors: Brandon Amstutz, James Freeman, Dakotah Cutter, Jaykob Gallop, Tyler Lenon, Austin Dunford, Calvin Sisson and Dylan Rosse. Senior Klayton Ruggles also will be expected to contribute.

“We hope to compete with everybody and finish near the middle of the pack,” Giddings said. “If we improve every day and the kids believe they belong on the field with any team, maybe we can surprise some teams this year.”
