The first game was a rout and the second game took some work, but the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks’ softball team captured a doubleheader sweep of Kellogg Community College on Friday.
MCC won the opener 16-0 in five innings and 7-5 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Jayhawks scored eight runs in the fifth inning, powered by a two-run single by Taylor Sanicki, an RBI double by Deanna Stickler-Gatson and a two-run double by Kelly Barnes.
Kayti Carlson finished with two hits and two RBI. She had a single in the first inning and a home run in the fourth.
Kellogg managed two hits off MCC pitcher Kaytlin Wozniak, who walked one and struck out five in her four innings of work.
Early on, MCC build a lead with three runs in the second inning. A two-run double by Jessica Gillings and an RBI single by Alyssa Telling go the Jayhawks off and running. Five more runs in the fourth put MCC in firm control of the game. Brooke Ager had a run-scoring double in that inning.
In the nightcap, MCC received a double by Sanicki in the seventh inning to take the lead for good.
Barnes had three hits and two RBI for MCC. That included a home run in the fourth inning.
Megan VanderWal was the winning pitcher for MCC despite allowing five runs in seven innings of work. She struck out six and walked three.
VanderWal had a run-scoring single in the first and another from Emily Peake in the second.
