There is plenty of excitement swirling around the Western Michigan Christian boys track team this spring.

That’s because the Warriors finished as the runner-up in last spring’s state meet.

“This has led to a lot of excitement and interest in the track program this year,” WMC coach Josh Scholma said. “It is no surprise that this year’s team boasts one of the largest teams in recent years and is full of first-year runners with lots of untested potential.”

Leading the way are senior sprinters Robert Wilkinson and Justin Kollar, who received all-state recognition in two events last season. Other key returnees include junior throwers Alex Rop and Bernard Smith along with sophomores David Gilson (1,600) and Elijah VanderVelde (800).

Promising newcomers include juniors Jake Kempster (distance), Jason Normandin (sprints) and sophomore Jacob Ray (high jump).

“The guys have been very willing to work hard and put the time in so it will be great to see the fruits of their labors later in the season,” Scholma said.
