The 6th Annual Adam Visser Memorial Scholarship Golf Scramble will be taking place on July 20 at Moss Ridge Golf Club in Ravenna. Proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for Muskegon Community College men’s basketball players.

The scramble is named in honor of the late Adam Visser, who was an all-conference point guard for the Jayhawks and a member of the 1990 national runner-up squad. Visser passed away in February of 2007 following a three-year battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Gene Gifford is the event organizer and also coached Visser during his time at MCC.

“Visser was our backup point guard and would have started for most teams in our league that year,” said Gifford. “The depth he gave us was always having offensive firepower. He was an outstanding point guard with tremendous ball handling skills, had great court sense, and was a great shooter.”

Gifford, who is currently the athletic director at Oakridge High School, set up the scholarship fund through the Community Foundation the year Visser passed away. The Community Foundation requires $20,000 in the fund before a scholarship can be given away.

The first recipient of the scholarship was given this past season to Kenya Oas. Oas is from Munising and played guard for the Jayhawks.

Gifford was quick to respond about Oas receiving the scholarship.

“I talked to him about Visser and what it meant for him (Oas) to receive it,” Gifford said. “It meant a lot to me too. Adam and his family were great supports to MCC and the basketball program.”

Entry for the event is $320 per team or $80 per person. The cost covers use of the driving range, cart and greens fees, hot dog, chips and soft drinks at the turn, and a full dinner after the scramble. There will also be door prizes, raffles and contests.
