NEWAYGO – Weston Butler passed for three touchdowns and a pair of running backs combined for 215 yards as host Newaygo opened the season with a 56-34 nonconference win over Holton.

The Lions built a 29-7 lead by halftime as Butler connected with Matt Milbourne for scoring strikes of 30 and 31 yards.

Newaygo’s Zach Knight carried the ball nine times for 108 yards and added a 96-yard kickoff return for a score, and Reo Heinzman finished with 107 yards on nine carries.

Holton finished with 465 total yards as Corey Sokolowski led the offense with 16 carries for 109 yards, Brad Eppet had 70 yards on five carries and scored twice and Hayden Cregg finished 10-of-18 for 199 yards passing with three TD’s. Cregg also had nine tackles on defense.

Brandon Foster led the Newaygo defense with 10 tackles, Rob Mendham added nine and AJ Bayes finished with eight.
