TRAVERSE CITY – The Muskegon Community College mens soccer squad won its first road match of the season, a 1-0 victory over host Lake Michigan Community College.

After a scoreless first half, the Jayhawks finally got on the board in the 48th minute, Eric Hilt, assisted by Michael Hower, bagged a goal to provide the winning score.

“We struggled early and were on the ropes, but some great saves by (goalkeeper) Loghan Stong  kept the game 0-0 at half,” said Jayhawk head coach Ben Ritsema. “(We) got a quick goal in the second half to get some life to the legs and the defense was able to shut them down the rest of the game.”

Ritsema pointed to the fine defensive play of Brandon Prim, Brandon Gillikin, Aaron Dault and Kyle Wansten as the key to the shutout win.

MCC outshot Lake Michigan  9-8, with Strong turning back all eight Lake Michigan shot attempts.

The Jayhawks now stand at 5-1 overall and 3-0 in MCCAA.
