MUSKEGON — Grand Valley State University’s Lakers ran away with the men’s title in the Jayhawk Cross Country Invitational for college runners Friday, Oct. 11.GVSU scored 27 points and had runners finish second, sixth, ninth, 12th and 14th in the overall results.

The men’s individual winner was a GVSU runner who ran unattached. Mark List had a 25:26.84 clocking while Ethan Barnes had the best time in the team competition in finishing second in 25:38.79.

The final men’s team scores had Lansing Community College coming second with 57 points while Hope College had 92, host Muskegon Community College 106, St. Clair College 136, Jackson Community College 167, Alpena Community College 188, Glen Oaks Community College 231 and Kuyper College 273.

Esrom Woldemicheal had the best finish by a Muskegon CC runner when he came in fourth in 25:56.18. Jacob Baker finished 22nd with a time of 27:02.61 for MCC.

In the women’s college race, Lansing CC won the title with 38 points while Hope had 55, St. Clair CC 95, Cornerstone University 99, Macomb Community College 110 and Muskegon Community College 124.

Unattached runners Rachel Bendewald, also a GVSU student, Alex McBride and Kelly Haubert finished 1-2-3 in the women’s race. Bendewald ran 19:16.35, McBride 19:23.01 and Haubert 19:32.95.

Kelly Weingartz, of Macomb, came in fourth individually and first in the team competition with a 19:36.91 clocking. Summer Hussey finished 17th and Andrea Lavigne, a former Mason County Central runner, 18th for MCC.

Muskegon Community College’s men’s and women’s teams, coached by Dan Fishel, hosted the invitational at University Park Golf Course.
