Mona Shores fought off a pesky Holland West Ottawa squad on Tuesday to capture a 3-1 victory in the opening round of Division 1 boy’s soccer districts.

Ryan Sustrich gave the Sailors a 1-0 lead with a goal set up by Nate Hoover.

Mona Shores took a 2-0 lead into halftime following a goal from Christian Zurchauer.

West Ottawa cut the Sailor lead to one goal in the second half, but Hoover responded quickly with a tally to give the Sailors their final edge. Devin Buit assisted on the goal after beating two defenders and finding an open Hoover.

Mona Shores was outshot 9-8. Sailor goalie Eil Bowers stopped seven shots.

Mona Shores advances to Thursday’s semifinals against Grand Haven at Holland West Ottawa.
