Local Sports Journal

Can anyone believe it’s Week 9 already? It seems like yesterday we were planning our football tab for area pigskin fanatics.

How many memories were made this season and how many more are right on the edge of becoming a dream come true?

I still am pinching myself after sitting down in the coach’s room at historic Hackley Stadium listening in on Ron Rop’s interview with coach Fairfield before Week 1. It’s times like that when the chills hit my skin and I realize how lucky we are to have dedicated sports writers and even more dedicated athletes and fans.

But it’s not just the dedication I feel so inspired by. It’s the history we all get to share right here in the Muskegon area. We have the heart of Michigan high school football right in our back yard. And when I find myself in a press box or coach’s room, I can’t help but be grateful for the century of hard work put in before the Local Sports Journal was ever on the scene.

So this week is kind of a somber week for me because I hate to see this season end. It’s even harder because I have to sit on the sidelines in New York as I’m here on business.

I do have a day job and it’s working for Garrison Dental in Spring Lake. And this job requires me to travel to some pretty cool places but the timing has me out on the East coast. It’s not something that disappoints me because I love the job. It’s just hard to not be at that Muskegon-Reeths-Puffer game to shoot video. Maybe one of my Western Michigan Christian brothers will come through with a few video clips for me to assemble when I get back home tomorrow morning.

Well enough reminiscing and let’s take a look at what the LSJ staff has picked for Week 9 and who is contention for winning this season football picks.

We can’t ignore what happened in Week 8 and we did have a pair of what I’d call upsets. Reeths-Puffer beat Mona Shores. We knew it’d be a tight game but my bet would be the majority of folks had the Sailors coming out on top.

The other upset happened northeast of us up in Fremont and we had a little controversy regarding it. Not one LSJ writer had picked the Packers to beat Ludington. And here we are again this week leaving out the Pack in favoring Montague.

Everyone agreed that Fremont would first need to end its 60-year losing streak to the Wildcats.

I really could keep going but let’s get on with the standings and the picks. Mark Lewis had a solid Week 8 by the way. Lew missed just a pair of games and leads by three games over Shawn Liverance and Steve Gunn.

Here you go:

LSJ Football Picks standings / Week 9 results
