MANISTEE – The Ludington Orioles served up an incredible evening Monday, defeating host Manistee in three sets of their opening round district volleyball match.

In the process, Ludington’s Maddie Brockelbank set a state record, serving 17 aces in the opening set as part of a 24-straight point serving sequence that gave the Orioles a 24-0 lead over the Chippewa. Manistee finally won a point on the 25th serve, but Ludington turned back the host’s serve to take the set 25-1.

Ludington won the next two 25-12, 25-15.

The Orioles advance to Wednesday’s match versus Benzie Central. Mason County Central will face Kingsley at Wednesday’s semifinal opener.

Ali Plamondon finished with six kills for Ludington, and Brett Brown added nine aces in the win.
