Evan Bruinsma, a graduate of Western Michigan Christian High School, scored a career high 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds on Sunday in the University of Detroit’s 104-102 triple overtime loss to Stony Brook. The game was played in the 2K Sports Classic Tournament.
Bruinsma made 6-of-9 shots from the field and 20-of-22 from the free-throw line. Included in his free throws were a pair with 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime that tied the game at 81-all and forced the second OT.
“I just tried to be more aggressive this game,” Bruinsma said of the disappointing loss.
“Its a frustrating loss, but that’s basketball,” Bruinsma said. “Basketball can be a roller coaster, but you’ve got to do your best to put yourself in a position to win late. Sometimes the ball bounces your way and sometimes it doesn’t. Hopefully we can just learn from these games.”
Besides the points and rebounds, Bruinsma had three assists and two steals. He played 41 minutes.
Through seven games this season, Bruinsma is averaging 10 points and nearly 8 rebounds per game.
