The host Western Michigan Christian Warriors used a second-quarter surge to break open a tight game against Kelloggsville on Thursday night.

In the end, the Warriors had a 79-44 nonleague victory over Kelloggsville.

After leading just 13-12 after one quarter, WMC went on a 20-1 run to start the second quarter and took a 35-18 lead into the half.

Senior post player Bernard Smith scored 13 points in that pivotal quarter. He finished with 29 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The game featured a big man matchup between Smith and Kelloggsville junior Austin Jackson.

“It was a pretty good matchup,” WMC coach Kyle Mastenbrook said. “Two big guys going against each other and we tried to attack him and go after him. Bernard does such a good job of staying clean on defense.
