DES MOINES — The No. 8 ranked Muskegon Community College wrestling team took to the mat against the nation’s top teams Saturday at the NCWA Cliff Keen National Duals and finished 2-1 as a team.

The 2-1 record qualified the Jayhawks for Day 2 of the competition and guarantee them some hardware after Sunday’s action.

“We just battled hard all day, and what is most important is that we are getting better in every match and learning,” said MCC coach Mark Brunger.  “I am really happy for the guys to have a good opening day and qualify us for tomorrow’s (Sunday) placement rounds.”

Undefeated wrestlers on the day were Mason Courtright (174, freshman/Shelby) 2-0,  Darian Holmes (285, sophomore/Woodhaven) 1-0, Shawn Chamberlain (285, sophomore/Dexter) 2-0, Steven Malloy (184, freshman/Morley Stanwood) 3-0 including a pin over 3rd ranked Miles Nixon of Northwest. Lukas Gilmore (165, freshman/Greenville) finished 3-0 on the day, including a 6-1 decision over top ranked Diorian Coleman of Northwest.
