GRANT – Though not conference foes, Friday night’s ‘proximity’ rivalry game between Newaygo and host Grant (2-2) came down to the wire, with the visiting Lions coming away with the 60-53 win.

Newaygo (2-1) led most of the way, grabbing an early 17-13 lead after one. Identical 11-point efforts by both clubs gave the Lions the 28-24 lead at the break.

The third quarter decided things, with Newaygo outscoring the hosts 16-10 in the frame, before withstanding a 19-point Tiger charge in the fourth to escape with the victory.

Newaygo’s Heath Harrington paced the Lions with 20 points (with four rebounds and three assists), while teammate Kyle Wright totaled in 12 points, four assists and two steals,  and Ben Wolford added nine in the win. Teammate Jake Warren pulled down six boards.

Grant’s Nick Brown led the Tigers with 17 points and five boards, while Tyler Manlick had 15 points and Dakota Scholten added eight in the loss.
