MUSKEGON — The Muskegon Big Reds jumped up four places to 35th in the USA Today Sports Super 25 national boys basketball poll announced today, Feb. 4.
Muskegon will take its 12-0 season record into two home games this week. The Big Reds host the Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills Knights (5-5) in an O-K Conference Black Division game in the first of two home games this week. The Kenowa Hills game will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
The Big Reds will play their other game in a non-league make-up game against the Benton Harbor Tigers (7-4). That game will be played Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. in Muskegon’s Redmond-Potter Gymnasium.
Muskegon remains the only ranked Michigan prep team in the national rankings. Detroit Pershing dropped out of the rankings after getting to 40th a week ago.
The only change in the top five in the national poll occurred when Arsenal Tech, from Indianapolis, Ind., slipped to 12th from fifth after splitting two games last week. Arsenal Tech is 17-2 for the season.
Mater Dei, of Santa Ana, Calif., continues in the top spot with a 23-0 record. Chicago Curie, which Muskegon defeated in early January, did not play any games last week and is still 19-1 overall. Muskegon turned back Curie in overtime when Curie’s best player sat out the game with a one-game suspension.
Montverde, Fla, Academy, now 22-1, and Rainier Beach, Seattle, now 19-0, stayed in the third and fourth spots, respectively in the national poll.
White Station, of Memphis, Tenn., moved up from sixth to fifth with its 22-1 record.
