A three-run third inning lifted Muskegon Community College to a 3-2 Game-1 win over Kalamazoo Valley Community College in a conference doubleheader on Sunday.

The Jayhawks fell 12-3 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Emily Peake started the third inning uprising with a RBI-single, Megan Jean followed with a single to center field and Caten Teff doubled to score Peake. The string of hits put MCC up 3-0.

Winning pitcher Megan VanderWal found her way out of a sixth-inning jam that allowed a pair of Cougar runs but left two runners stranded.

Meghan Birr led MCC with three hits and Teff had two hits and an RBI.

The Jayhawks could not contain Kalamazoo’s bats in the nightcap, giving up three runs in the second inning and seven more in the fourth.

Sarah Ferenz was the source of offense for MCC with a solo home run and two singles to finish with three RBI. Mary Guidice added two hits.
