SPRING LAKE — Two college golfers set the pace in terms of qualifying for the 93rd running of the Spring Lake Women’s Invitational Golf Tournament Monday.

Britni Gielow, of Muskegon and a member of host Spring Lake Country Club, advanced automatically as the defending champion. She played last season at Grand Valley State University before transferring.

The other, Jenny Sritragul, of Michigan State University, advanced with a five-under-par 67 during the tournament’s 18-hole qualifying round on the par 72 course.

The results put Gielow, now a student at Hope College, in the upper bracket while Sritragul has the top spot in the lower bracket.

Other Monday qualifiers for the championship flight included former North Muskegon teacher and coach Karel Bailey, of White Lake Golf Club in Whitehall. Bailey had an 85 and landed the sixth spot in the qualifying round.

Tuesday’s first round of match play has Gielow playing another SLCC member, Michele Yasenak, at 8:39 a.m. Yasenak qualified with a round of 86.

The other pairing in that bracket has Donna Benford, of Spring Meadow Country Club, playing Susan Campbell of Kalamazoo’s Milham Park Golf Course at 8:45 a.m. Benford carded a 79 and Campbell an 81 Monday.

The lower bracket has Sritragul taking on Chris Zeigler, of the Moors Golf Course, at 8:51 a.m. while Maureen Whitehead, of Petoskey Bay View Country Club plays Bailey at 8:57 a.m. Zeigler had an 86 for her qualifying score, and Whitehead carded a 79.

Wednesday’s semifinal rounds have the Gielow-Yasenak winner advancing to play the Benford-Campbell winner at 8:39 a.m. while the Sritragul-Zeigler winner plays the Whitehead-Bailey winner at 8:45 a.m.

Whitehead won the SL Women’s Invitational in 2010 while Benfor has won the last Golf Association of Michigan Women’s Senior Open tournaments.

The starting time for the championship match Thursday will be 9:51 a.m. The consolation flnals for the championship flight will begin at8:12 a.m. that day.
