Muskegon native and Reeths-Puffer standout Mark Hughes is in running to be hired on as an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons have been undergoing a number of coaching changes in the offseason and Hughes is in top running for an assistant job. The team recently hired Stan Van Gundy as head coach.

Hughes was co-captain on Michigan’s 1989 NCAA championship team. He played for the Pistons in 1991 and also the Toronto Raptors during the 1996 season. He is being considered for a scouting position as well as an assistant.

At the coaching ranks, Huges was the head coach for the Grand Rapids Hoops in the CBA from 1997 to 2002. The Orlando Magic employed Hughes as an assistant coach from 2002-2004 and he also coached for the Sacramento Kings. The New York Knicks used him as a scout during 2007-2008.
