The Muskegon Big Reds went on the attack early Thursday night and cruised to a 5-3 OK-Black Conference soccer win against Zeeland East.

“We came out very aggressive and dictated most of the first-half play,” Muskegon coach Jeff Holmes said. “I was very pleased with the ball movement, it was a quick pace and very controlled. We did a nice job playing patiently and created opportunities.”

The Big Reds (8-4-1, 4-4)  were paced on the offensive end by Miguel Flores, who had two goals and an assist. Demetrio Lopez, Angelo Hernandez and Drake Gomez all scored a goal for Muskegon. Daniel Sischo chipped in with a pair of assists and goalie Jake VanHoesen stopped three shots.

After Muskegon led 2-1 at halftime, Drake’s goal came when it deflected off a Zeeland East defender’s head and into his own goal.

Zeeland East scored 30 seconds later to come within 3-2, which would be as close as it would get. The Big Reds would pull away with two more second half goals.

Muskegon will host Muskegon Catholic Central on Monday.

Reeths-Puffer 2, Mona Shores 0: Freshman goalkeeper Jake Lofgren came up big for the Rockets, making eight saves in the OK Black shutout victory. After a scoreless first half, the Rockets’ Alec Mavis scored in the fifth minute of the second half off of a pass from Collin McFalls. Noah Sorn added the other Reeths-Puffer goal and was assisted by Mavis with 17 minutes left in the game.
