The Newaygo defense stopped Grant at the two-yard line near the end of the game Friday to seal a 14-6 victory for the Lions in a Central State Activities Association matchup.

After a scoreless first quarter, Grant’s Garrett Bomay broke off a 51-yard touchdown run in the second, giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead.

“We started out slow tonight,” said Newaygo head coach Andy Busch. “We gave some good motivation at halftime and the kids responded well. They didn’t go out there hanging their heads.”

Newaygo got a three-yard touchdown run from Alex Bulson in the third quarter to take a 7-6 lead.

Reo Heinzman rushed for a two-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Lions their final margin of victory.

Grant drove 70 yards on its final possession, but failed to put the ball in the end zone.

Heinzman led Newaygo with 136 yards rushing on 21 carries. He also kicked both extra points and added eight tackles on defense. Quarterback Jack Boyd had four completions for 86 yards passing and Matt Milbourne led the defense with 10 tackles.

Newaygo improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Lions face Kent City next week in their final home game of the season.
