The Kent City boys basketball team built a 10-point lead, then withstood a Hesperia comeback to grab a 72-69 victory Friday in Central State Activities Association action.

Hesperia had a potential game-tying shot in the final seconds, but it fell short.

“It seems like every time we got up nine or ten they came back in a hurry,” said Kent City Coach Mark Thompson. “We played them this summer so we knew it was going to be a good game.”

Dustin Heeringa led Kent City with 27 points and nine rebounds. Randy Thompson added 14 points and eight rebounds and Nick Alt had eight points, five assists and three steals.

Traxton Gordon had a huge game for Hesperia, nailing three 3-pointers, going 9-for-9 from the free throw line and finishing with 26 points.

Adrian Castillo hit three 3-pointers of his own and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line to finish with 14 points. Junior Nate McKeown finished with 12 points and six assists in the losing effort.
