Mason Powell nailed the game winning shot from the right block near the hoop as time expired Tuesday, giving the Grant boys basketball team a  60-58  victory over Whitehall in non-league action on its home court.

Powell had 23 points and 12 rebounds while Riley Patterson added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“I expected this to be a great test for us early on,” said Grant coach Josh Delamater, “Whitehall is always a tough team and is well coached.”

The Tigers led 40-37 entering the fourth quarter.

Whitehall’s Patrick Johnson tied the game at 58-58 with 25 seconds left with a pair of free throws before Powell’s game winning buzzer beater.

It was a tough loss but I really thought this was a really good high school basketball game,” said Whitehall Coach Nate Aardema. “The game was close throughout and both teams did not commit many turnovers.”

Keenan Aylor lead the Vikings with 21 points while Johnson added 11 points and six rebounds.

Mason County Central 60, Newaygo 53 – The Spartans led 27-21 at halftime and held on for the victory.  Johnny Schafer led Mason County was 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Wolford led the Lions with 12 points.

Shelby 48, Fremont 32 – The Tigers jumped out to a 15-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the win. Caleb Anderson led the team with 16 points. Osvald Tranholm paced the Packers with nine points.

Montague 65, Manistee 50 – The Wildcats put up 23 third quarter points after taking a 27-16 lead into halftime. Dontay Smith led all scores with 18 points and had four assists and three steals for Montague. Jacob Buchberger added 14 points, three assists and three steals while Merritt Hamann and Josh Weesies scored 11 points apiece for Montague.
