Tommy Scott grabbed the ball after a North Muskegon turnover and scored the winning layup in the final seconds, giving Muskegon Catholic a dramatic 47-46 opening night win over North Muskegon in non-league boys basketball action.

The Norse called timeout and set up a play after Scott’s bucket, but their final shot went in and out as time expired.

The lead went back and forth in the second half, with MCC leading through most of the third quarter and North Muskegon grabbing a small lead in the fourth, before the Crusaders used their pressure defense to force several turnovers and claw back in the game.

“I just feel we need to get into our groove,” said Muskegon Catholic Coach Lamar Jordan, whose team has had few practices due to the football team’s state championship run. “We’ve only had three practices, and it was kind of difficult running our offense.

“We just need to take it one game at a time and one practice at a time and get better as a team.”

Christian Martinez led MCC with 12 points while Erik VanFossen and Lamar Jordan each added eight points. Nate Jones pulled down 10 rebounds.

Erick Bleakley and Marco Visconti scored 10 points each for North Muskegon.
