The Muskegon Community College men’s basketball team opened up its conference season on the road on Friday and lost 87-81 to Lake Michigan College.

The Jayhawks fell after fighting tooth and nail with Lake Michigan throughout the contest. The game was tied 35-35 tie after seven lead changes in the first half.

MCC trailed by just two possessions with two minutes left in the game but LMC offensive rebounds were too much for the Jayhawks.

Eddie Tornes led MCC with 28 points while Deshawn Sanders scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Will Roberson scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half and Tyrone Maxwell II came off the bench with 10 points.

“We knew this was going to be a tough game against a good team,” said MCC coach Dave Schlump. “We battled and played hard but we didn’t do a good enough job on the boards and we had some guys struggle with their (LMC) size and shooting the ball. But we need to move on from here, there’s lots of games left … it’s a long conference season.”
