The Mona Shores girls’ basketball team overcame an eight point fourth-quarter deficit on Tuesday night and defeated Holland West Ottawa 43-42 on its home court.

“Our kids fought back,” said Mona Shores coach Brad Kurth, whose team is now 6-1 on the season as it prepares to begin O-K Black Conference play. “The primary reason we won tonight was we made some key stops down the stretch.”

The Sailors fell behind 19-5 after the first quarter and trailed 36-28 after the third quarter.

Shamara Tumblin, Jordan Walker and Kelsey Wolffis made some key shots in the fourth quarter, giving the Sailors a 43-40 lead with five seconds left.

Holland West Ottawa’s Katie Reitberg was fouled while trying to make a game tying three point shot.  Reitberg made two of the three free throws, falling just short of forcing overtime.

Walker led the Sailors with 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists while Tumblin had 12 points and five rebounds.
