The Holton girls basketball team won its first district title in the history of the program Friday with a decisive 60-36 victory over Shelby in the Class C title game in Shelby.

The Red Devils, now 18-5 on the season, now advance to the first round of regionals Tuesday against Morley-Stanwood.

The Mohawks, a conference foe, beat Holton twice during the regular season, so the Red Devils will looking for revenge.

Holton took control of the game early, using tough defense to outscore the Tigers 34-8 in the first half.

The Red Devils also got a big boost from standout point guard Jacki Stone, who dislocated her thumb in practice earlier in the week, but answered the bell against Shelby with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.

“She practiced yesterday, kind of half speed, but she’s a gamer,” said Holton Coach Jayson Robins. “She was thinking about basketball and not how bad her thumb hurt.”

Rachel Younts and Courtney Slater led Holton’s scoring with 14 points apiece while Katie Wildfong added 12.

Miranda Unger and Chloe Sillman paced Shelby with nine and eight points, respectively.
