The Muskegon Community College men’s basketball team served notice to potential opponents Tuesday by blasting Ancilla College 82-67 in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association district tournament.

The Jayhawks advanced to Friday’s semifinals at Delta College at 5 p.m. If they win they will play in the tournament final on Saturday.

Tuesday’s victory completed a three-game season sweep by MCC over Ancilla.

The game was tied 30-30 at halftime. Ancilla opened up a five-point lead in the second half, but the Jayhawks, playing on their home court, responded with a 34-14 run to take control of the contest.

“I’m very, very pleased with our effort and especially our execution in the second half,” said MCC Coach Dave Schlump. “I’m very happy for the win and for this group. Any time you win a game in the postseason it’s a great win.”

Deshawn Sanders scored 26 points and Eddie Tornes added 18 points and seven rebounds for MCC. Aaron Sydnor contributed 12 points, six rebounds and three steals; Justin Kennedy had 10 points and six rebounds and Marcus Tumblin chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
