A furious second half comeback was not enough to prevent the Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team from dropping a 63-53 decision to Lake Michigan College Thursday in regional semifinal action at Delta College.

The loss marked the end of the season for the Jayhawks, who finished 19-9. Lake Michigan, ranked 17th in the nation, improved to 23-8 and advanced to the regional finals.

The Jayhawks trailed 36-14 at halftime, then turned on the jets to take a 40-36 lead. But they ran out of gas down the stretch and lost for the second time in three meetings with LMC this season.

“The first half was 20 minutes of basketball I cannot explain,” said MCC Coach Rob Recknagel. “We were not physically or mentally present. The second half was vintage Jayhawk basketball. We were back and fought like warriors but it was too late. The first half did insurmountable damage.”

Taylor Brown wrapped up her MCC career by scoring 10 points and dishing off five assists. Morgan Giddings had 11 points and nine rebounds.
