Grand Haven couldn’t defend its home turf in the opening round of the Division 1 district tournament on Tuesday, as rival West Ottawa came away with a 2-1 victory over the Bucs.LSJ Logo incert

It was the third time this season the Panthers toppled the Bucs. West Ottawa advances to Friday’s district semifinal against Jenison, which defeated Mona Shores on Tuesday.

The contest was scoreless throughout most of the first half, until the Panthers struck first with a goal with three minutes, three seconds left on the clock.

The Panthers made it 2-0 nearly 11 minutes into the second half, putting the Bucs in catch up mode.

Grand Haven made up some ground with just two minutes remaining, as Madi Steggles scored on a penalty kick, but could get no closer.

Grand Haven held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, with Buccaneer  goalie Alyson Donselar making three saves.

Jenison 2, Mona Shores 1 – The Mona Shores girls soccer team’s season came to an end on Tuesday after a 2-1 loss to Jenison in Division 1 district quarterfinals. Sarah Mikesell scored the Sailors lone goal. Jenison will play Holland West Ottawa on Thursday in district semifinals.
