Funeral services for Rich Tompkins, the legendary track and cross country coach at Fremont High School, will be 11 a.m. on Monday at Hart United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at King Funeral Home in Hart, and again on Monday one hour prior to the funeral.
Tompkins, 69, of Mears, died suddenly on Tuesday of an apparent heart attack while water skiing on Silver Lake, according to various media reports.
During his coaching career, Tompkins led the Fremont boys cross country team to a 250-29-1 dual record, with 116 consecutive dual victories from 1977-88, according to the Muskegon Chronicle. The team won 21 conference, 13 regional and six state titles. His girls teams won 11 conference and six regional titles.
Tompkins’ boys track teams won 13 conference championships, three regional titles and finished in the top 10 in the state four times, according to news reports. He retired from coaching in 1997.
