The Fruitport volleyball team opened the season with a pair of easy victories, then lost a tough three-set match in the Traverse City West Invitational on Saturday.LSJ Logo incert

The Trojans opened with a 25-22 victory over Forest Hills Northern and a 25-7, 25-13 win over the Traverse City West junior varsity.

They lost their final match of the day to Traverse City West, 26-24, 23-25 and 21-25.

Individual leaders for Fruitport were Delaney Bennett with 25 kills, Alyssa Veihl with 65 assists and Sam Hockstra with 17 digs.

Lakeshore Invitational – The Grand Haven volleyball team hosted the Lakeshore Invitational on Saturday and finished in second place.

The Bucs defeated Livonia Stevenson, Grand Rapids Catholic, Mason and Hudsonville before losing to Novi 25-16, 25-20 in the finals.

Emily Lachmann had 32 kills on the day for Grand Haven. Olivia Boeve had 11 aces, Sophia Newhouse had 39 digs, Katie Cole had 105 assists and Morgan Ross had six blocks.

Holton Red Devil Invitational – The host Red Devils defeated Newaygo and Manistee and lost to Oakridge and Hesperia.

Mikaela Baker had 20 kills and four aces in the tournament for Holton while Shelby Younts had 12 service points and 39 assists.

Allendale Invitational – The Grant volleyball team capped off a great weekend by taking second in the Allendale Invitational.

The Tigers downed Holland, Holland Christian, Allendale and Zeeland West to advance to the tournament finals.

They won the first game against Forest Hills Eastern 25-23, but dropped the next two games 15-25, 12-15.

Hannah Anderson led Grant with 23 kills, Sierra Schuitema added 22, while Ashley Herin had 11 aces and 29 digs.

On Friday Grant went 6-0 to capture the championship in the WMVOA Officials Scholarship Tournament in Grand Rapids.

Kent City also participated in the Allendale tournament, posting a 4-2 record. The Eagles beat Saranac, Grand Rapids Union, Covenant Christian and Zeeland West and lost to NorthPointe Christian and Grant.

Kassidy Heeringa had 22 kills, 25 assists and seven blocks in the tournament for the Eagles. Blaire Mortensen had 34 assists and 10 aces while Kelsey Krueger had 52 digs.
