The Montague volleyball team opened the season in terrific fashion on Saturday, winning five matches en route to the championship at the Reeths-Puffer Invitational.LSJ Logo incert

The Wildcats defeated Spring Lake, Mason County Central, North Muskegon and Reeths-Puffer to qualify for the finals.

In the title match, Montague jumped ahead of Mona Shores 8-0 in the first set and held on for a 25-23 victory. In the second set the Wildcats led all the way and won 25-16.

Leaders for Montague were Emma Flagstead and Robbie Berg, who had 73 and 48 kills in the tournament, respectively. Sierra Armstrong added 61 digs while Morgan Roesler had 13 aces.

Mona Shores defeated North Muskegon, Reeths-Puffer, Mason County Central, Spring Lake and Montague in pool play.

Grace Hellman had 35 kills for Mona Shores while Madison Dunn added 25 and Ryleigh Wehler had 21. Katie Hermanson had 80 assists while Kennedy Potts added 41 digs and 13 aces.

Spring Lake finished 2-3-1 in the tournament, with victories over North Muskegon and Mason County Central, two losses to Mona Shores and one loss to Montague.

Olivia Grimmer led Spring Lake with 36 kills and 38 service points, Isabel Donnelly had 26 kills while Lauren Helman had six blocks.
