Red Wings 1, Capitals 0- Red Wings’ rookie Andreas Athanasiou scored his first National Hockey League goal in his second career game.

Athanasiou’s goal at the 4:06 mark of the third period, led Detroit over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night at the Joe Louis Arena.

The game was scoreless after two periods of play.

Detroit’s goaltender Petr Mrazek picked up the shutout victory, he stopped all 38 Capital shots.

The Red Wings are now 8-6-1 on the season, good for 17 points and a second place tie in the Atlantic Division.

Detroit will host the San Jose Sharks on Friday night.
