The Grand Haven volleyball team opened the Class A district tournament with a 3-0 victory over Reeths-Puffer on Monday night on its home court.
The Buccaneers won the match with set scores of 25-15, 25-6 and 25-13. They advanced to the district semifinals Wednesday night at home against Grand Rapids Union.
Mona Shores will play Grand Rapid Kenowa Hills in the other semifinal match.
Kenowa Hills advanced by beating Muskegon in three sets on Monday. The Big Reds were led in that match by Renee Sischo with 11 digs and seven assists, while Lanesha Spencer added eight digs.
Grand Haven, which advanced all the way to the state semifinals last year, improved to 46-7 on the season.
“We played pretty well,” said Grand Haven Coach Aaron Smaka. “It’s always good to have a great start in the tournament and we had great balance offensively.”
Morgan Ross led the Buccaneers with seven kills while Emily Lachmann added six. Sophia Newhouse led defensively with 17 digs and had six service aces, while Katie Cole chipped in 28 assists.
Reeths-Puffer was led by Cam Vanderleest with six kills and Emma Lynn with seven digs.
