The two West Michigan Conference rivals met five times in the regular season, with Montague winning the first three and Shelby taking the last two.

But Montague bounced back and captured the victory that counted the most, a 3-0 win over Shelby Thursday in the Class C district finals at Mason County Central High School.

The Wildcats won the match by scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18. The victory prevented Shelby from repeating as district champions.

Emma Flagstead led Montague with 16 kills and four blocks, Summer Garwood chipped in 31 assists while Robbie Berg had nine kills, 20 digs and five aces.

Montague will move on to play Ravenna in the first round of regionals Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Kent City High School.

Shelby finished the season with a record of 22-20-2.
