The Jayhawks got an opportunity for revenge on Saturday and took full advantage. Eddie Tornes hit a bucket with 3.8 seconds remaining to give the Jayhawks a thrilling 86-85 victory.

The game was back-and-forth, with both teams getting hot and taking leads.

MCC led 26-14 with 10 minutes left in the first half and led 44-36 at halftime.

Mott ralllied in the second half and led by as many as nine points. But Mott missed 5 of 6 free throws late in the game, leaving the Jayhawks a final opportunity.

Tornes hit a pair of triples in the final minute to pull the Jayhawks within one point, then nailed a jumper with 3.8 seconds left for the winning points.

“Just an unbelievable tough and gritty effort by our guys tonight,” said MCC Coach Dave Schlump. “This was a team win because we had guys, whether a freshman or sophomore, make tough plays at the most important times in the game.

“From guys hitting free throws, to our effort rebounding the ball, to then being able to execute down the stretch the way we did. Shows you what these guys are all about. Hats off to Mott, that is a good team. ”

Tornes finished with a game-high 27 points on 11 of 20 shooting. Marcus Tumblin recorded an impressive double-double with 26 points and a career-high 19 rebounds and freshman Terrance Cosby added 14 points and 13 rebounds.
