The Pirates trailed by one point with less than 20 seconds to play when Coach Staci Hovey drew up a play to give the Pirates a scoring opportunity.

“They switched the defense up on us,” Hovey said. “But it was basically the same play. We were running a screen off of (Colon) for her and Baylee Draper. We were looking for that pick and roll, but Yasmine got a shot off. It missed, but she got the rebound and put it back up.”

Shelby (11-7, 9-4) had a chance to chuck up a buzzer-beater, but couldn’t get a shot off.

Draper led the Pirates with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Colon finished with 17 points and eight rebounds while Hailey Alvesteffer added nine points.

Jenny Beckman scored 19 points for the Tigers. Brooke James finished with 12 points and eight rebounds and Chloe Sillman had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
