The Muskegon Community College softball team split a doubleheader with conference rival Kellogg Community College on Tuesday, losing the first game 11-3 and winning the second 8-0.
The Jayhawks lost the first game despite a strong starting pitching performance by Katie Hendrickson, who struck out eight while scattering seven hits with three walks.
Kellogg went up for good in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on an error, a solo home run, two singles, and a two-run triple.
Bri Mairose and Alexis Melton each had two hits for MCC in the opener. The Jayhawks turned the tables in the nightcap with a shutout victory.
They took the lead in the second, scoring two runs on an RBI single by Candace Sutter.
MCC padded its advantage rin the fourth inning on an RBI double by Morgan Giddings, an RBI double by Carrie Mesman, an RBI single by Hendrickson, and an error.
Hendrickson finished with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Mesman added three hits and an RBI for the Jayhawks
MCC pitcher Morgan Engelsman pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out nine.
The Jayhawks are now 21-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
